Walnut’s grain is usually straight, but can be irregular. Heartwood can range from a lighter pale brown to a dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks. Color can sometimes have a grey, purple, or reddish cast. Sapwood is pale yellow-gray to nearly white. Figured grain patterns such as curl, crotch, and burl are also seen. Walnut is many times appreciated in a natural finish, however, it does accept stain beautifully.
Lumber from Walnut trees isn’t always cut into small boards. In some cases, large lengthwise cross-sections of the tree are used as “live edge” slabs.
